Which Grand Parkway segments were toll roads near Lake Conroe?
In November 2015, the Texas Real Estate Research Center listed segments of the Grand Parkway (SH99) as TxDOT toll roads. The Texas Real Estate Research Center placed those segments in Harris, Montgomery and Chambers Counties.
Montgomery County is one of the three counties on that list, and Bentwater, Walden, April Sound, Grand Harbor and Point Aquarius are all in it.
The list describes TxDOT's network as it stood in 2015. Check the toll status of the segment a drive would use against current toll records.
What did the 2015 law ask TxDOT to report about tolls?
The Texas Real Estate Research Center says House Bill 2612 required TxDOT to report to Senate and House Transportation Committee members no later than September 1, 2016.
The report concerned removing tolls on most toll projects in the state, in the Texas Real Estate Research Center's account. The word "most" sets the scope: the report reached most toll projects, not every one.
House Bill (HB) 2612 requires the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to provide a report to Senate and House Transportation Committee members no later than September 1, 2016, concerning the removal of tolls on most toll projects in the state.
How does growth north of Houston reach Lake Conroe?
In May 2025, the Texas Real Estate Research Center published a travel profile of towns north of Houston that closed with a quick look at Huntsville.
The Texas Real Estate Research Center's writer called Huntsville's growth dramatic and judged its businesses and institutions probably a source of employment for some Lake Conroe residents. The same sentence named people living on Lake Livingston too.
The word "probably" is the writer's own, so the profile offers a likely source of jobs rather than a count.
Huntsville and the lake share a river. The Harris County Flood Control District describes the San Jacinto River flowing from its headwaters near Huntsville through Lake Conroe. Growth north of Houston can mean work north of the lake as well as south of it.

What does the 31-minute Census commute figure north of Houston describe?
It is a median for the Livingston area, cited in a May 2025 look at towns above Houston from the Texas Real Estate Research Center. The profile reads: "The U.S. Census reports median commuting times of about 31 minutes, meaning actual commutes can be as much as 50 percent more." The figure belongs to the Livingston area, so a Lake Conroe address needs its own drive timed.
A median is the middle value. About half the commutes counted ran shorter and about half ran longer. The writer's line about actual commutes running up to 50 percent more is a caution set beside the median. Time a drive from a Lake Conroe address at the hours you would make it, on the route you would use.
Besides the Grand Parkway, which toll roads were in TxDOT's network in 2015?
Two others appear by name in a November 2015 article from the Texas Real Estate Research Center. One is the Central Texas Turnpike System, known as CTTS, around Austin. The other is the Camino Colombia Toll Road, SH255, near Laredo. The article opened its list with the word "includes", so the roads it names are examples from the network rather than all of it.
For a Lake Conroe buyer, the Grand Parkway entries are the ones tied to the area, since Montgomery County appears among them. The other two roads show how far the 2015 network reached across the state.
Which of Lake Conroe's two counties is on the Grand Parkway toll list from 2015?
Montgomery County is, and it is the only one of the lake's two counties named. Lake Conroe lies in Montgomery and Walker counties, on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River. About 5,000 acres of the lake are in the Sam Houston National Forest. The Texas Real Estate Research Center's 2015 list names Harris, Montgomery and Chambers Counties.
A lot's county also decides which records hold it. Plats are recorded with the county's property records, so a lot in one of the lake's counties and a lot in the other are looked up with different clerks.
How current are the published sources on commuting from Lake Conroe?
The two Texas Real Estate Research Center pieces sit a decade apart. Its article on the 2015 transportation funding laws is dated November 2015. Its toll list describes TxDOT's network as of that year. Its report on travel through the towns above Houston, ending at Huntsville, is dated May 2025.
Read the toll list as a 2015 snapshot. The report deadline in House Bill 2612 fell in 2016, after the list was written. Check the toll status of any segment you would drive against current toll records before you weigh a commute.
What ties Lake Conroe to the City of Houston?
Water, from the start. The San Jacinto River Authority and the City of Houston built the lake together beginning in 1969. It was built as a backup water supply for Houston, and the dam was finished in January 1973. The city holds two-thirds of the right to use up to 100,000 acre-feet a year, and releases ahead of a storm are made at its request.
Water the authority releases for the city goes through the dam into the San Jacinto River and flows on to Lake Houston. The city also pays two-thirds of the authority's Lake Conroe Division operating costs. Since September 2015 the lake has also supplied drinking water in Montgomery County.
